New Getting-to-School Improvements on the Way

Posted: 2013-06-01

Three new school access improvement projects are coming this summer!  The three projects will install "bulb-outs" on Las Gallinas Avenue in front of Miller Creek School at Elvia Court, an improved crosswalk on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Meadow Way at San Geronimo School, and a new sidewalk and bike lanes on Lomita Drive from Shell Road to Greenfield Court near Edna Maguire School.

The projects are funded through the Safe Pathways to Schools program which targets safety improvements that enable children to walk and bicycle to school.  Construction on the projects should begin later this month and continue over the summer break to be completed in time for school at the end of August.

So what is a "bulb-out"?  It is an extension of the sidewalk, usually at intersections, to narrow the length of a crosswalk to make the distance across the street shorter as well as improve the visibility of pedestrians to motorists.  Bulb-outs are raised up from the street at the same height as the sidewalk and extend into the roadway in the area typically used for parking but do not encroach into traffic lanes or bike lanes.
