The
Cal Park Tunnel and Path are expected to open in November 2010. The
tunnel portion was completed in April, and the next phase consists of
completing the multiuse pathway outside the tunnel: constructing
retaining walls, a bridge over Bellam Blvd, lighting, and preparation
of the trackway for the future SMART tracks. Construction of this final
phase began in May. The tunnel itself is lighted and outfitted with
security cameras and call boxes. A full-height wall separates the
train tracks from the path to improve safety between train operations
and path users.
The railroad tunnel is one of many in Marin that have been abandoned since the early 1970's but reserved for future transit use. Cal Park is the first tunnel in the county to be rehabilitated for bicycle and pedestrian use and is the only one that will feature transit. This segment is a key link in the North-South Greenway, connecting the Lower Ross Valley with Central San Rafael. In addition to being a key eastern corridor connection, the path provides access to Larkspur Landing, the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, and residential and employment centers in downtown San Rafael, the Canal, and the Andersen Drive corridor.

As
you probably know, we have a great Farmer's Market here in Downtown
San Rafael! It happens every Thursday through the summer from 6 to 9 PM
on Fourth Street, and it's easy to get there by walking or bicycling.
Transporting your produce by foot or by bike is a breeze — use a tote
bag, basket, backpack, panniers, or a trailer to get those fresh fruits
and vegetables, organic foods, and flowers home in no time.
Take a shuttle and avoid the stress and the parking fees! Take the Marin Airporter to SFO or the Airport Express to OAK. Both leave from the San Rafael Transit Center.
The Marin Airporter leaves hourly at 15 minutes past the hour from 4:15am to 10:15pm, seven days a week. The ride takes one hour and 15 minutes without traffic. The Sonoma Airport Express departs every two hours at 15 minutes past the hour from 4:15am to 8:15pm. The ride to the Oakland Airport takes about one hour. Adults are $20 one-way to SFO and $24 one-way to OAK. Follow the links above for more detailed pricing and schedule information.

The Way to Go program emulates other successful personal travel planning programs which focus efforts on all households in a selected area and provides an intensive outreach over a four-month period. Funding through the NTPP allows implementation of the Way to Go program in four communities, each being done over one summer between 2008 and 2010.
